Carrick 2 Glentoran 2 , voting open, stats online.
Colin Nixon was both hero and villain at a cold Seaview yesterday where the second game after Scott Young's resignation ended in a drab 2-2 draw.
Nixon was first a villain when in the 65th minutes played a ball across the face of the Glentoran goal straight to Carrick's Marcus Kane who scored easily past Elliott Morris from 16 yards. Hero arrived five minutes from the end of normal time when he rose like a salmon (horrible cliche I know) to power a header home from close range. With defeat staring the Glens in the face it was a good time to make up for the earlier mistake.
The Glens had opened the scoring in the 29th minute with Sean Ward scoring his second goal in two games. This one wasn't as spectacular as the strike at Ballymena though. This was a ground shot from far out on the right which went past a lot of players and into the net. A fluke, but when you want a win, who cares.
The Carrick equaliser came seven minutes after the interval when a ball was cut back from the goal line and McDowell hit a crisp shot int e net from just inside the penalty area.
A draw was probably a fair result, but we need to get a permanent manger in place as soon as possible. Roy Coyle will steady the ship, but the new man will put stamp his mark on a side which, to be honest, yesterday looked as if it didn't know what it was doing.
Wo will that new man be? Don't know, but as Paul Kirk said, he must be given the time to see the job through. In the past we have been too quick to get rid of managers if things weren't working. The new man must be given time and everybody must realise that. I doubt if he will bring us trophies overnight. Let's hope we get back to where we belong as soon as possible.

Glentoran 0 Newington 1, voting open [ here ] stats online.
A side footed goal in the 24th minute by Newington's Neil Quinn resulted in the most humiliating result in the history of Glentoran Football Club.
Make no mistake. The paragraph above is not an over reaction to the Glens going out of the Irish Cup today. It is a fact.
I have watched out great club for over 50 years and have witnessed many highs and lows. I remember the European nights against Benfica, CSKA Sofia and others. I remember the defeat in the cup by Brantwood, but this one has seen us hit rock bottom. The club cannot go any lower can it? Bottom six in the league is possible, but surely not.
There is not one positive thing to write about today's inept performance. The players should feel ashamed of themselves and for letting down the manager and, most importantly, the supporters who turn up every week and pay their hard earned cash which pays the wages of these guys, some of whom seem not to care about the club.
Well done Newington. You deserved your victory. Enjoy it.

Glentoran 0 Portadown 2 MOTM open. Stats updated
The questions continue to be asked about Scott Young and the players following another disappointing home performance this afternoon which saw Portadown go home with the three points following their 2-0 win.
After a scoreless first half at saw the Ports hit the woodwork twice the men from County Armagh took the lead in the 69th minute when Jamie Tomelty out jumped the returning Aiden O'Kane to place a header across Elliott Morris and into the net. The keeper should have come for the ball inside the six yard box, but instead left it for the ex-Blueman to deal with.
The second goal came in the 90th minute with e Glens pressing forward for the equaliser. Kevin Braniff found himself inside the box to receive a cross all from the right and he made no mistake.
Not a lot of positive things to say about the Glens again today. The usual booing greeted the referee's whistle to end the game, but would a change of manager alter things? I don't think so. What do you think? Let us know.

Glentoran 3 Distillery 3. MOTM open [ here ] Stats updated
It was the two half-time substitutes who saved the Glens blushes today as more points were dropped at home in what is becoming a very poor season.
Matty Burrows and Richard Gibson replaced Darren Boyce and Ciaran Martyn at the break and it took Matty just five minutes to score heading in from a couple of yards. Gibbo got his after 67 minutes hitting home at the end of a good move involving Gary Hamilton and Jamie McGovern.
Scott Young made a number of changes from Tuesday's hammering by Cliftonville and perhaps the most surprising was the dropping of skipper Colin Nixon to the bench.
Things looked fairly rosy when David Howland slotted the opening goal from 16 yards in the 27th minute, but three minutes later the Whites were level when Gary Liggett bundled the ball over the line after looking as if it had been kicked out of Elliott Morris's hands. Latvian referee, Andris Treimanis however saw nothing wrong with it and it was 1-1.
EIght minutes later and Distillery was in front. Jamie Callacher lost the ball inside the Whites half and within seconds David Cushley had fired across Morris into the net.
Just two minutes after Burrows equaliser Liggett grabbed his second after good control in the penalty area. The striker actually should have secured the points for the Whites with the last kick of the game, but he ballooned the ball over the bar from about 16 yards.
This was another unacceptable performance from the Glens. With the Christmas programme looming we must get back in the winning way or else we will struggle to finish in the top six come the split in the New Year.
The Latvian officials today had a good game which was interesting seeing that in the 36 games he's refereed Mr Treimanis has issued 175 yellow and 13 red cards. His three yellows today were hardly warranted.
Portadown next up for the Glens. Can anybody see a way out of this? I certainly can't, but get out of it we must. The supporters who have been fantastic again this season have to rally round the club even more. No more booing the manager guys. He's giving his all and suffering like all fans.

Stats online, (not good reading)
Congratulations go to Cliftonville on winning the County Antrim Shield at the Oval tonight. A thoroughly deserved victory, but how were they not out of sight of the Glens long before they scored the second goal?
The Glens were poor as the match stats show. Only two efforts on goal throughout the whole ninety minutes. Not good enough. The ball was given away too often and we looked laboured and at times it was all too easy for the Reds. Having said that we could have taken the game into extra time if Darren Boyce had scored with his header in added time or, if he had left the cross go to Nicky, the skipper would have put it away.
The game was only about five seconds old when Gary Hamilton clattered into Ryan Catney in the centre circle and was lucky not be booked. My only other memory of a foul being committed so early was one by Colin O'Neill against us at Shamrock Park a lot of years ago.
It took until the 44th minute for the Reds to take the lead. Martin Donnelly was fouled by Ciaran Martyn as he homed in on goal and he took the resultant penalty himself and sent Elliott Morris the wrong way. The Glens keeper had made three excellent saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless, but couldn't do anything on this occasion.
The second goal came after 87 minutes when substitute Joe Gormley, who had only been the pitch for two minutes, broke away and scored from about 12 yards into the keeper's right hand side.
The Glens consolation goal came a minute into added time when Gary Hamilton's 25 yard free kick was fumbled by keeper Connolly and Johnny Taylor poked the ball home. Then came Boycie's effort and the final whistle.
We didn't deserve to retain the binlid tonight. We were second best in every department. We had no midfield and when we cleared the ball it was only to a Cliftonville player and another raid was started.
Where do we go from here? I have no idea except we have to get behind Scott Young and support him. He's doing his best with what he's got. We can't afford to bring any new faces in so the players know that Scott has to use them. They must rally round and get back to winning ways starting with Saturday's game against the Whites. We know we won't win the league this season, but we want some good football and something to cheer about.
COYG!

Cliftonville 2 Glentoran 1, Voting open. Stats online
An added time own goal from Ciaran Martyn gave the Reds a deserved win at Solitude today. The
Glens just didn't play today and need to improve greatly if the County Antrim Shield is to stay at the Oval after next Tuesday's game.It looked good for the Glens after 17 minutes when a Stephen Carson cross from e left deceived John Connolly in the home goal and went in the net. However it was downhill from there on in.
The second half was all Cliftonville. They had chance after chance to score, but it took a mistake from Ross Davidson to allow Stephen Garrett to go through and beat Elliott Morris. It was into the 92nd minute when the Reds got the winner. The ball was played into the Glentoran box and Sean Ward attempted to clear, but the ball hit Martyn and rebounded into the net. Up to the other end and a fine Gary Hamilton free kick was well stopped by Connolly to deny the Glens a share of the points.
Must say that referee Mark Courtney had his usual poor game today booking no fewer than eight players. The match had hardly a bad tackle in it. Let's hope the assessor was watching.
We turn to the Shield Final on Tuesday. No doubt Cliftonville will start as favourites, but the Glens can win it. A fit Gary Hamilton can be the difference between the sides and if Andy Waterworth is fit he could cause problems for the Reds defence. Let's hope we can deliver and keep the Shield at the Oval.

The Ballymacs bus to Cliftonville this Saturday will leave Wilgar street at 2.00pm
Just a wee update on todays Legends match.
Glentoran Legends finally get Dun over
In today's charity game at Wilgar Park the Glentoran Legends fell to their first defeat in over two years as Dundela Old Boys won 5-4 in a closely fought contest. Goals from Billy Caskey , Chris Walker , Alex Robson and Gary Blackledge werent enough as the Duns edged home in the end. The result though is not important as the real winners on the day were the Mc Dermott Unit and Ward 25 of the Ulster Hospital who will be the recipients of the funds raised on the day. At present that amount has reached around £1200 and hopefully more will follow from the evening function.

Glentoran 2 Glenavon 0. Voting open for Man of the Match. Stats online
An essential three points were pocketed by the Glens at the Oval today with this 2-0 win over bottom side Glenavon.

Whilst the points were welcome, with the teams above us all winning, we made no leeway into the deficit between us and the leaders.
With the quartet of Waterworth, Hamilton, Martyn and Hill sitting injured in the Director's Box, Scott Young started with Martin Murray, Kyle Cherry and Ross Davison with Jim O'Hanlon and Owain Beggs on the bench. A very young Glentoran squad indeed. What happens if we get further injuries nobody knows, but the team is down to it's bare bones with only Jamie McGovern and Matty Burrows still to be recalled.
Anyway we watched a fairly nondescript first half with the Home side taking the lead in the 22nd minute when a Stephen Carson free kick fell to Ross Davison 12 yards out. The youngster hit it expertly past Glenavon goalkeeper Andy Coleman to lift the gloom that has been hanging over the side since last Saturday.
The the second goal came seven minutes before the end of normal time and an exquisite one it was too. Young Beggs found O'Hanlon with a pinpoint pass and Jim then delivered an exceptional cross onto the head of Darren Boyce who powered his header home - all three substitutes played their part.
Glenavon never threatened to take the points today. They looked a fairly mediocre side and it's going to be hard to get off the bottom of the table. The Belfast Glens however can look forward hoping that the last two performances are well behind them. Two games against Cliftonville are now approaching. The game at Solitude on the artificial surface will be hard, but the following Tuesday's County Antrim Shield Final at the Oval will give us a chance to lift the first trophy of the season. Let's hope we can win both games.
